General WIWTY Questions:
How does this work, exactly?
It’s pretty simple.
1. You decide which package(s) you’d like.
2. You submit your request.
3. If I accept your request, I’ll send you a link to finalize your order.
Once you’ve finalized your order and sent me the information that I need to complete the work for you, I do the work.
This is a first come, first served offer. Requests will be reviewed in the order that they are received. Work will be done in the order that requests are finalized and final requirements (like your hosting login information) are submitted to me. Don’t worry…once you’ve sent in your request, I’ll walk you through the rest of it!
That’s it! It’s not complicated, but if you have any questions that these FAQs don’t answer, please click here to ask away!
Is there a minimum charge?
Short answer: no.
This project is built on the expectation that you will really pay me what my work is worth to you or your business. I believe you’ll treat me fairly.
When you submit a request, you’ll name your price. There are several questions within my request form that will help me to determine whether or not to accept your request.
I reserve the right to refuse a request (don’t expect me to build you a site for $5). But I won’t be making that decision solely on the price you name. It’ll depend on all aspects of your submitted request.
My hope, though, is to say “yes” to every request. So please do your best to treat me fairly, and I’ll do my best to get you up and running with your new site quickly!
All of that being said, when I launched the WIWTY project for the first time six years ago, people really struggled with pulling a number “out of thin air.” Even though I was asked repeatedly, I resisted offering suggestions, because this isn’t about what my time is worth to me. It’s about what the offer is worth to you. (If you want to pay what my time is worth to me, start here.)
But it was an oft-asked question. For that reason, I’ve included a few payment choices for each package in the “Submit Request” form.
These aren’t recommended or required payment options. They’re just filler so you don’t feel like you’re pulling numbers out of thin air.
ALL of these options are less than I’d charge you if you were a traditional web development client. And, of course, I’ve included an “Other” option, so you can fill in your own price. This project is called “What’s It Worth To YOU?,” after all :). And I really want you to tell me what it’s worth to you!
I love this concept, and I really want to take you up on the offer. But I can’t afford to pay you what I think it’s worth right now. Can we set up a payment plan?
First, I don’t want you to spend money that you don’t have unless it’s for the purpose of making money. If you’re planning on using your website to create an income stream for yourself, then I’m in your corner.
Second, the answer to this question will be on a case-by-case basis. But I’m inclined toward “yes.”
The Maintenance and Group options are already monthly offers. There’s really no way to payment plan a recurring payment plan. But the Jumpstart offer is ripe for the payment planning.
If you’re in a situation where you don’t have the money to pay me what you think is fair, but you need the website up and running to earn the money to make that payment, reach out to me using the form at the bottom of this page. Tell me a little bit about your current situation, your plans for your website, what you think it would actually be worth to you, and what you CAN afford to pay right now. I’ve been there. It’s hard. We’ll see if we can’t just work something out.
Do I have to put a deposit down, pay up front?
You do pay up front. The order in which I receive payments (which finalize the order) is the order in which I do the work.
You submit a request and name your price –> I approve your request and send you a link to submit payment* –> You submit your payment –> I add you to the queue and complete your work as soon as your turn comes up.
*When I accept your request, I’ll give you a more specific time frame based on the current queue.
Are there any additional fees after the website is built?
Nope. Not from me! You name your price for the WIWTY Jumpstart. Once I accept your request and do the work, you don’t owe me anything else (unless you decide to also take me up on my maintenance and/or group offerings).
The Maintenance and Group offers do have ongoing charges (monthly for Maintenance, quarterly or yearly for Group). You still name your price, though. So once we’ve finalized the deal, you won’t have any surprises.
You will have an annual fee for your domain registration and web hosting accounts, though. That’s just the cost of doing business online. I’ll help you figure out how to choose a registrar and host if you want help, but you’ll pay them directly…I won’t have anything to do with that.
What if I don’t like my website. Can I get a refund?
Once the work is done, it’s done. If something comes up and you need to cancel before I’ve begun work on your project, I’ll be happy to refund you. But once the work has begun, the deal is done :). At that point, there are no refunds.
The services offered within WIWTY Jumpstart are not subjective. It’s not about site design. It’s about laying the proper foundation: installation, security, backups, legal essentials, SSL configuration. There’s nothing subjective about any of it (please name your price accordingly). So there’s no room for “I don’t like my website, I want my money back.” You know what you’re getting from the start, no “tweak that color please” guesswork :).
You’ll be the one choosing the theme. You’ll have determined your design. And if you hate that later, it’s easy enough to switch by choosing a new theme. But the strong foundational framework of your site remains the same. (Click here for more details about WIWTY Jumpstart.)
For WIWTY Maintenance, when the work of updating your site is done, it’s done. Until the next time that it needs to be done again :). I can’t undo it. (Well, I suppose I could, but that would be really uncool!
However, you can cancel your WIWTY Maintenance and/or Group access at any time. You’ll have a contact form inside of your WIWTY Maintenance and Group membership areas. If you want to cancel, let me know and I’ll stop your Maintenance plan or Group access before the next payment is processed.
What’s included in each package?
Each package has its own page with all of the details (click on the package titles below to view their individual pages. Here’s the short version…
Can I order more than one package?
Certainly! They’re designed to play well together, so my hope is that you’ll take me up on all three offers.
Additionally, if you do the Jumpstart/Maintenance packages as a combo, there are a few bonuses (detailed on the individual Jumpstart and Maintenance package pages.
How long does it take to get a website?
That’s a good question!
This is a first come, first served offer. Requests will be reviewed in the order that they are received. Work will be done in the order that orders are finalized (aka: paid).
Requests will be processed, and finalized orders will be completed, as soon as possible. Depending on how many requests are being processed at a time, it could be as quickly as one day, or as long as 8-10 days. I don’t anticipate that it will take longer than that. I’ll update this FAQ if the time frame changes.
When your request is processed, I’ll give you a more specific time frame, based on my current queue.
Can I request more than one website?
Sure! You’ll need to put in a separate request for each site (Jumpstart and/or Maintenance).
Is this only for businesses?
Nope, it’s for anyone that needs a website. It’s your site…I don’t care how you plan on using it :).
I’m secretly hoping that some parents with enterprising kiddos might take this opportunity to help them get started, too! (Parents, if your child is under eighteen years old, you’ll have to be involved as well. I imagine you’d prefer it that way, anyway!)
Can you update my current website?
Yes and no.
The WIWTY Jumpstart package is for new sites. There are two semi-exceptions to that:
1. If you currently have a website hosted on WordPress.com, and you want to move to a self-hosted site, we can do that with Jumpstart. We’ll set up your new site, you’ll choose a theme, and we’ll import your content from your .com site (I’ve discussed this in the Jumpstart FAQ section as well).
2. If you currently have a self-hosted WordPress site that you hate, we can start from scratch with WIWTY Jumpstart. Just as we’d do with a .com site, we’ll set up the new site, import your old site’s post and page content, and you’ll be off and running.
The WIWTY Maintenance package includes security and speed audits during the onboarding process (discussed further on the Maintenance package page). So in that regard, your site would be updated during the process. But from a design standpoint, the answer is no.
Will I be able to make changes to my website?
Yup! That’s the beauty of WordPress. It’s a “content management system,” which means it’s designed so that the code and content are separate from each other.
As far as changing the design is concerned, that’ll depend on the theme that you choose. Many of them have lots of point-and-click settings that you can use to change colors, fonts, etc. I’ll point you in the direction of a few themes I’d recommend, if you’d like. In fact, if you do the Jumpstart/Maintenance combo, I’ll add just such a theme to your site as a bonus (more details on the Jumpstart and Maintenance pages).
What about custom design and development work? Can I order something outside of the three packages?
Members of WIWTY Group will have access to a “Can you just…?” snippet service.
If you’re part of the group, you can order work done on your site on a one-off basis, at “What’s It Worth To You?” prices (meaning you name your own).
There are more details of this service on the WIWTY Group page.
What if I want to just do it myself? Can I join WIWTY group without first buying a Jumpstart or Maintenance package?
You certainly can! I’d love to have you join the group, whether you need/want the Jumpstart or Maintenance packages or not.
Also, one of my projects currently in development is a very comprehensive tutorial series for beginners. It’s not ready to roll yet, but you can sign up here to be notified when it is: https://mollyogren.com/tutorials/. (Incidentally, I’ll be debuting the tutorials inside of WIWTY group as I write them, so you’ll be able to get them there, first. (More details on how that works on the Group page.)
I’ve explained some of my favorite DIY WordPress tools on this page. Feel free to take a look: https://mollyogren.com/recommendations/
WIWTY Jumpstart Questions:
Are hosting and domain name registration included?
No, they’re not.
WIWTY Jumpstart is for site set-up only. You’re responsible for your domain name registration and purchasing a hosting package. That said, I’ll definitely make a few recommendations for you. There’s good, bad, and ugly in the hosting industry. I’ll help you stay away from bad and ugly!
I’ve heard a lot about set up, security, backups, and legal mumbo jumbo. Glad we got the boring stuff covered. But what about site design?
WIWTY Jumpstart is all about the boring stuff! It’s the most essential part of having a self-hosted WordPress site, and it’s also the most often ignored part, simply because people who are just getting started don’t know what they don’t know. And they don’t know where to start!
With WordPress, the design of your site is controlled by a theme. You can create a custom theme (or hire one done), or use a premade theme. As part of the WIWTY Jumpstart package, I’ll install the theme of your choice for you.
Some themes are free, others cost money. I’ll make a few recommendations for you, and point you in the direction of the most reputable places to get your themes. Once you’ve chosen a theme (and purchased it, if it isn’t free), I’ll install it on your site for you, if you want it.
If you request the WIWTY Jumpstart/Maintenance combo, I’ll include a premium point-and-click theme, and a drag-and-drop page builder, in your site setup.
And, as a member of WIWTY Group, if you want specific customizations made to your site, I may either teach you how to do it within the group, or do it for you with my “Can you just…?” snippet service.
What if I want a fully-designed custom site?
I do that too, but it’s not a part of WIWTY. If you’d rather have a 100% done for you custom solution, head over here and make an appointment. I’ll be happy to talk with you about that.
My goal with this WIWTY Jumpstart is to get you to the good stuff. Typically, DIYers do a one-click WordPress installation through their host, upload a theme and a few plugins, and go to work posting content on their site. It’s not hard to understand why this happens. WordPress is billed as “easy.”
The problem is, security best practices often get skipped entirely. I’ve dealt with cleaning up a lot of messes over the years from people who learn this the hard way. At best, they’re faced with starting over. At worst, they lose business and/or content that they spent a lot of time putting together. Either way, it’s a hassle and no fun. And sometimes it’s an expensive lesson.
You can learn to do everything that I’m offering to do for you in the WIWTY Jumpstart package, all by yourself. There are TONS of tutorials out there that can teach you every step. Heck, I’m even working on putting together my own comprehensive training program.
WIWTY Jumpstart is about skipping the learning curve.
It’s about saving you the time, energy, and frustration of slogging through the information out there to find the good advice, then figuring out how to put that advice into practice. It’s about helping overcome the “you don’t know what you don’t know” conundrum.
If you don’t know what you don’t know, how in the world do you figure out what you need to learn? WIWTY Jumpstart’s about jumping you over those (tedious, confusing, maybe even overwhelming, but very important) first hurdles and getting you to the good stuff.
Is there a refund available?
No, there isn’t. Once the work is done, it’s done.
The services offered within WIWTY Jumpstart are not subjective. It’s not about site design. It’s about laying the proper foundation: installation, security, backups, legal essentials, SSL configuration. There’s nothing subjective about any of it. So there’s no room for “I don’t like my website, I want my money back.” You know what you’re getting from the start, there’s no “tweak that color please” guesswork involved :).
You’ll be the one choosing the theme. You’ll have determined your design. And if you hate that design later, it’s easy enough to switch by choosing a new theme. But the strong foundational framework of your site remains the same.
Do you add content to my site, or do I?
You do. But don’t worry, I won’t leave you to figure all of that out on your own, either.
Once your site is set up for you, you’ll have access to a Quickstart manual (to teach you how to publish posts and pages, moderate comments, add images and video, etc.). All of your getting-started bases will be covered (to push you past that learning curve, too).
You’ll also have a Maintenance and Updates guide, so you’ll be able to manage your site and keep it up to date over the long haul (very important for site security). Of course, you could do the Jumpstart/Maintenance Combo package, and leave the maintenance up to me :).
Are there any additional fees?
Nope. Not from me! You name your price for the WIWTY Jumpstart. Once I accept your request and do the work, you don’t owe me anything else (unless you decide to also take me up on my maintenance and/or group offerings).
You will have an annual fee for your domain registration and web hosting accounts, though. That’s just the cost of doing business online. I’ll help you choose a domain registrar and host if you’d like, but you’ll pay them directly…I won’t have anything to do with that.
What if I need additional help?
WIWTY’s got you covered!
With the WIWTY Maintenance package, I’ll take care of keeping your site backed up and updated for you. You’ll be able to keep skipping the tedious (but vital!) and keep working on the good stuff. Additionally, if you go the Jumpstart/Maintenance combo route, I’ll install a point-and-click theme and a drag-and-drop page builder on your site, so you’ll be able to handle a lot of customized design work yourself, without knowing how to write any code.
Members of WIWTY Group will have access to a “Can you just…?” snippet service. If you need design and development help with your site, that would be a good place to start. And the group in general will be great for most “how do I?” and “what should I?” questions you may have along the way.
I already have a WordPress site, but it’s a mess! Can you help?
That depends. There’s an “onboarding” process for the WIWTY maintenance package. I’ll do site speed and security audits (which would include making sure everything is up to date and running properly). If you submit a request for the WIWTY maintenance package, I can help you to determine whether or not it would be a good fit for your situation.
But the WIWTY Jumpstart offer is for starting from scratch. If your current website is such a mess that you just want to start over, then, sure! I can help :). We can move your current post and page content to a new site, but beyond that, you’ll be starting at the beginning with a solid foundation.
I already have a self-hosted WordPress site, but I hate my host. Can you move it for me?
Sure! A site migration is included with the WIWTY Maintenance package. Click here for details of that package.
I have a WordPress site on WordPress.com. Can you help me set up a self-hosted site instead?
Absolutely. That would be a great way to use the WIWTY Jumpstart offer!
I’ll get your site foundation set up for you, we’ll import your current posts and pages (unless you don’t want them), you can choose a new theme, and you’ll be off and running with your self-hosted site!
If you’d like help keeping your site backed up and updated, be sure to select the Jumpstart/Maintenance combo when you put in your request. You’ll get a few great bonuses as well (access to a point-and-click theme, and a drag-and-drop page builder, for example).
And if you’d like a support system and some guidance as you’re learning the ropes of self-hosted WordPress, you might consider some time in WIWTY Group as well.
If I do the Jumpstart package now, and decide to do the Maintenance package later, can I still get the combo bonuses?
Yes, you can.
If you don’t order the combo now, you may have to include an onboarding fee when you name your price for the maintenance plan. A lot can change with a site over time. Depending on how much time passes between when I hand over the Jumpstart reigns to you, and when you hand over the Maintenance reigns to me, I may want to do a security audit before taking on responsibility of your site.
WIWTY Maintenance Questions:
Are hosting and domain registration included?
No, they’re not.
WIWTY Maintenance is for site maintenance only. You’re responsible for maintaining your domain name registration and web hosting. That said, if you’re unhappy with your current host I’ll definitely make a few recommendations for you. There’s good, bad, and ugly in the hosting industry. I’ll help you stay away from bad and ugly.
A site migration IS included with the WIWTY Maintenance offer. If you want to move away from your current host, when your Maintenance request is finalized, I’ll surely help you with that.
I have a website on WordPress.com. Can I hire you to maintain that?
Nope. WordPress.com takes care of the maintenance of sites hosted with them.
But if you’re interested in the flexibility of a self-hosted WordPress site, I can certainly help you with that. You’d need to start with the Jumpstart package. I’ll get your site foundation set up for you, we’ll import your current posts and pages (unless you don’t want them), you can choose a new theme, and you’ll be off and running with your self-hosted site!
Once you have a self-hosted WordPress site, WIWTY Maintenance is here for you :). If you’d like help keeping your new self-hosted site backed up and updated, be sure to select the Jumpstart/Maintenance combo when you put in your request. You’ll get a few great bonuses as well (access to a point-and-click theme, and a drag-and-drop page builder, for example).
And if you’d like a support system/some guidance as you’re learning the ropes of self-hosted WordPress, you might consider some time in WIWTY Group as well.
Will you do development work for me as part of the maintenance package?
Not at this time. I may add that option later, but for now, WIWTY maintenance is just about keeping your site as secure as possible, backed up, and updated, and helping you to recover if something goes wrong anyway.
However, if you’d like the option of ongoing development help and one-off jobs, you might consider joining the WIWTY Group. Members of WIWTY Group will have access to a “Can you just…?” snippet service. If you need design and development help with your site, that would be a good place to start. And the group in general will be great for most “how do I?” and “what should I?” questions you may have along the way.
Can I get a refund?
No, but you don’t need one. Just like the WIWTY Jumpstart, keeping your site updated and backed up isn’t subjective, it’s objective. You can’t not like your backup :).
When the work of updating your site is done, it’s done. Until the next time that it needs to be done again!
But you can cancel any time. You’ll have a contact form inside of your WIWTY Maintenance membership area. If you want to cancel, let me know and I’ll stop your Maintenance plan before the next payment is processed.
WIWTY Group Questions:
What kinds of questions will you answer within the group?
That’s a good question.
I’ll answer pretty much any question that I can, either with my own explanation, or by referring you to outside sources that have already done a thorough job answering the question. Sometimes, I may do both. Pperhaps it’s an opinion-based question and I’ll want to show you more than one side so you can make an informed decision. Or maybe there’s already solid information out there, but I’ll need to add a little extra, for clarity).
That said, I’m hoping that the group will really foster beginners. So if you’re looking to join for help with more advanced topics (plugin development, for example), that’s not this group. I want as many of the questions asked to benefit as many of the group members as possible. If we delve too deeply into advanced waters, I’m afraid we’ll lose my intended audience :).
What makes WIWTY Group different from a free Facebook group?
Size, for one. I run a few Facebook groups, and I’m a member of many others. The most fun that I had doing it was early on, when groups first started. All of the groups are thousands-strong now. But back when we had about 200 people, we really all had a chance to get to know each other (as well as you can, through keyboard). Once my first group hit 250, it lost some of its intimate appeal.
Personal attention, for two. Don’t get me wrong, I love the group capabilities in Facebook. It’s really the only reason I use the platform at all. There’s a lot to learn, no matter where you are in the learning process, and there are a lot of people willing to share their knowledge. But so often, answers are really incomplete. The question asked might be addressed, but the backstory and context isn’t always included.
In that early group, my answers to questions were basically mini-tutorials. It was fun for me, and really useful for newbies who didn’t know what they didn’t know, so they didn’t know what to ask. But Facebook groups are free. Nobody can put that kind of effort into helping you that thoroughly for free, forever. I did it for about 6 years before I had to come up for air. And it was really exhausting! Plus, we’re all busy. With this group, part of my “busy” will BE this group.
Here are a few real-life examples to illustrate what I mean. In my Inner Circle (a paid group that isn’t accepting new members now) I was asked the following:
“I have been looking for a plugin that will allow me to add code to the header of a page or post or event on my site. I found one that would do it for every page, but I need some pages to have different codes…Maybe you know a plugin that allows code to be added per page?”
That resulted in an 8-page “eBook Answer” pictorial to show him how to do it for himself.
I was asked how to customize the style of forms on a website. That resulted in an 8-page “eBook Answer,” too.
I was asked how to create proposals that sell without being sales-y. That ended up being a 39-page eBook answer.
And a question about creating circular buttons that change when the mouse hovered over them ended up being a 300-page CSS primer.
You can’t get that kind of attention in a free Facebook group. Not because there aren’t people there who are capable of providing the help, and would love to. But because there just aren’t that many hours in a day to work for free. In my first group I tried…for years :).
What types of information might I expect from the tutorials, eBooks, and guides in this group?
I am working on a couple of projects and planning for a few more. You’ll have access to each piece of the project as I complete it along the way.
For example, that CSS primer that I mentioned above was written specifically for my Inner Circle group a couple of years ago. I’m going to dust it off and update it (most of it remains the same, but some tools have changed, for example). While I’m doing that, it’ll be available in the group. When I’m done, it’ll disappear from the group and go up for sale.
But only time will tell exactly what will become available! Just as I illustrated in the few examples I gave in the previous question, your questions will certainly help to influence the direction of my guides.
One major caveat, of course. I can’t just download information from my brain. I wish I could, believe me! But getting it all out and explained in a coherent manner takes time. So I can’t promise that I’ll be able to thoroughly explain exactly what you want to know at the time that you most want to know it. I’ll do my best, but that’s where the one-on-one guidance and “Can you just…?” snippet service parts of this group will come in handy for you!
Where’s the line between one-on-one guidance as part of the group, and “Can you just…?” snippet service as an added extra? It seems a little vague.
Honestly, I don’t know. This’ll have to be a “we’ll see” thing, guided by practicality and (in part) by luck of the draw.
If you ask me how to do something that would benefit a lot of people, I’ll either write a detailed “how to” guide, or do it for you and use your project as a case study. But if you ask me something I’ve already covered, the do-it-for you part will be off the table unless you use the “Can you just…?” snippet service.
If you ask me something that’s complicated to explain because it requires a lot of backstory and context explanation, and I don’t have time to teach you in a timely manner, I may do it for you. If it’s complicated because it’s a lot of work and will take a long time to implement, it would be a snippet service request.
I’m sorry that I can’t answer this more precisely, but I just can’t anticipate what you’ll ask. It’ll be a gut thing, I’m afraid. But the short version is probably: if it benefits the whole group for me to help you, I’ll help you. If it benefits only you, it’s a snippet service request.
I hope that makes sense!
Do I have to buy another WIWTY package to be a WIWTY group member?
Nope! I’d love to have you join the group, whether you need/want the Jumpstart or Maintenance packages or not.
Also, one of my current projects is a very comprehensive tutorial series for beginners. It’s not ready to roll yet, but you can sign up here to be notified when it is: https://mollyogren.com/tutorials/ (Incidentally, I’ll be debuting the tutorials inside of WIWTY group as I write them, so you’ll be able to get them there, first.
